Marriage is serious matter
and one has to follow all the legal and formal regulations as required by law
of the land.
In India, laws relating to marriage follow the
guidelines enacted under various Acts of the Indian constitution.
The most recent of such laws to be passed is
the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

|
This act is for those who undertake a civil marriage.
Under this Act, no formal marriage ceremony is required other than registration
of the marriage.
In the case of all religious and ceremonial marriages,
the couple has to register their marriage with registrar of marriages.
In many matrimonial disputes involving
religious and ceremonial marriages, it is quite common for either of the
spouses to claim that no valid marriage has taken place. Those who conduct
these marriages rarely maintain proper records. This is another reason why it
is advisable to register your marriage after a religious/ceremonial marriage to
confirm its legality.
